MD-82 How to start engines – tutorial

I wrote a tutorial to help absolute beginners to start MD-82 engines using APU.

I also added some bit of theory, just to explain how a jet engine works.

Click below to download:

Version 1.03: Added GPU  (Ground Power Unit) and  ASU (Air System Unit).

Version 1.02: thanks to Jack Johnson, now you can navigate the Table Of Content (summary) with a click on the item. It also works on the footer to go back to the TOC (click on “Summary”). I tested it with Foxit pdf Reader

Version 1.01: added index, titles numbering and web resources

Version 0.00: first issue.

Please leave a comment below if you like or displike this tutorial. Every advice will be welcome.

  1. Good Tutorial.
Consider using a dynamic Table of Contents where the reader can click on a TOC paragraph entry and be linked to the paragraph in the document. Also, place document links back to the TOC at the bottom of each page.
This makes reading and navigating within the document much easier and goes a long way towards producing a professional looking document.

  2. the your tutorial for md82 to start up is ok, but when i clik to OFF APU master switch che engine stop and avionics stop.
This is problem for me, you really have notate this problem?

    1. Hi Paolo.
My simulation station is on revamping phase, so I can’t verify. But let me tell you, on my memory, that what you say shouldn’t happen.
When your engines are running properly, they supply all the electricity, the compressed air and the oil pressure that the aircraft needs.
Maybe you forgot some switch to power the avionics from the engines and not from the APU.
Remember that on this website there is an italian version of the tutorial, step by step.
I’m rather confident that if you carefully follow each single step you should succeed.
      Let me know.

  3. its good tho share our knowledge with others.
    I really appreciate it
My childhood dream was to skyrocket a jet, apparently not as simple as I imagined

    1. Starting the MD80 engine isn’t so easy, that’s why I decided to write a tutorial. I don’t know what about newer liners, maybe the just need to “push the button”, but I don’t think so. I think you always need to start the APU, open the fuel valve, the air valve, ignite, wait for the turbine to reach the minimum RPM and so on. Once you get familiar with this sequence, evwerything becomes easy and straightforward.
